How to Get a Journeyman's Card

Introduction

If you work as a plumber, roofer, welder, or other tradesman career, you may want to apply for a Journeyman’s card to prove your advanced knowledge of your trade. To be eligible for a Journeyman card, you must have completed an apprenticeship and have many years of experience working in your field. The term Journeyman comes from medieval Europe where apprentices worked for master tradesman for 2-7 years before they gained enough experience to become a tradesman in their own right.

- College degree

- Passport photo

Instructions

Step 1

Graduate college with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. Major in a subject that will help your career such as engineering or just in general studies.

Step 2

Complete a three year certified apprenticeship program. Make sure you receive proof that you finished the program.

Step 3

Work for a total of eight years in the field. Your three years of apprenticeship count towards the eight years. Make sure that you have documentation of your years of employment.

Step 4

Acquire a journeyman’s card application from your Union. Fill out the application. Assemble the following items: official letter verifying your years of employment, a passport-sized photo of yourself, and the completed application.

Step 5

Send the above items to your Union. Within a short period of time, they should mail you a Journeyman’s card. If you do not have the qualifications that they are looking for, you will be denied the card with an explanation of how to get what you need.
