How to Repair an Army Tent
Introduction
The name army tents may bring to mind an image of an indestructible structure but army tents are susceptible to damage. Army tents can sustain damage from inclement weather, cigarette burns, and carelessness, among other causes. The method of repair depends on the size of the tear. You can almost treat the tent the way you would a pair of jeans that need to be mended. Once you have repaired your army tent, you’ll be ready for another campout.
Difficulty: Moderate
Things You'll Need:
- Velcro
- Strong thread
- Needle
- Beeswax
- Canvas
- Scissors
- Strong glue
- Stick canvas
Instructions
Step 1
Evaluate the size of the damage. Find out what caused the damage. This will help you know how to repair the tent.
Step 2
Stitch Velcro strips into the tent down both sides of the tear using strong thread. Overlap the two sides of the tear and press both sides of the Velcro together. Rub beeswax over the Velcro to permanently seal the tear. This method will work best for a medium to large tear.
Step 3
Buy canvas that matches the color of the army tent. Cut a patch that is about double the size of the tear out of the canvas. Spread strong glue around the outer edges of the canvas patch. Press the patch to the army tent around the tear. Let the patch dry completely before using the tent. This method will work best for smaller tears.
Step 4
Purchase the same kind of stick canvas that you put on sail letters. Press patches of this to over burn holes in the army tent to repair them.
Tip
Keep extra canvas and Velcro is a safe place in case you need to make additional repair later.
