animal control officer

How to Train to Be an Animal Control Officer in Canada

Introduction

Animal control officers are commonly known as dog catchers. Their job is to capture stray animals and bring them to shelters. The animals are held at these shelters for a period of time to await their owners. If their owners do not show up, these animals will be released, adopted, or euthanized. Animal control officers also educate about proper animal care, rescue animals in danger, and dispose dead wildlife. Animal control officers can be hired by local shelters or by the police department.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:

- High school diploma or GED

Instructions

Step 1

Get your high school diploma or GED. Sometimes employers require a college diploma as well so it may help to graduate a university with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. If you do decide to attend college, majors in animal science or biology will be the most helpful for an animal control officer.

Step 2

Gain experience with animals. Get a job at your local animal shelter or work in a zoo. This will make you more attractive to potential employers.

Step 3

Take a course. The National Animal Control Association holds classes all over the country. These courses will cover topics such as proper methods of euthanasia, guidelines for capturing animals, and dealing with the public.

Step 4

Find a job as an animal control officer. The rest of your training will be given to you on-the-job by your employer.

Tip

Make sure you are a patient and sensitive person before attempting this job because many aspects of working with animals can be frustrating.
