How to Install an Interlocking Metal Roof

Introduction

Metal interlocking roofs currently have a large fan base. One reason for their newfound popularity is that they are superbly durable. Metal roofs come in many styles and can look like shingles, clay tiles, slate, among other options. Metal roofs repel water and will last for many years. They can be fitted over your existing roof. Due to new technology, many homeowners can now install their own metal interlocking roof without the help of a professional.

Difficulty: Difficult

Things You'll Need:

- 30-pound felt

- Interlocking metal roof

Instructions

Step 1

Pick a ventilation style for the attic. Most people choose to put in a continuous ridge vent.

Step 2

Layer 30-pound felt in places that ice will build up such as along the edge of the roof. This is called an underlayment.

Step 3

Place the fascia and the drip edge along the border of the roof. Put pre-formed metal channels in the spots between roof sections. These channels will allow excess water to drain down off of the roof.

Step 4

Stand the gable flashing on the rims of the gables. Secure the sidewall flashing to the walls that attach to the metal panels. Fasten the ridge caps at the roof’s peak.

Step 5

Install the first panel parallel to the peak of the roof but start from the edge of the roof. Make sure it is perfectly parallel so that the rest of the panels will be put in straight.

Step 6

Put in the next panel towards the direction of the roof’s peak. Overlap the panels by one inch. Space the fasteners and apply sealant according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Tip

Find out if your town has any building codes that affect metal roof installation.

Warning

Inspect your current roof for damage prior to installing the interlocking metal roof.
