How to Wire a Car Audio System

Introduction

You can save a lot of money by wiring your audio system yourself and not paying a car mechanic to do it for you. Before you work on your car’s audio system, you need to understand what a stereo system is made up of. It is made of four parts-the head unit, the speakers, the amps, and the subwoofers. The main part of a car audio system is the head unit which is the CD player. The head unit can be found in the dash.

Difficulty: Difficult

Things You'll Need:

- Audio system

- Wiring kit

- Screwdriver

Instructions

Step 1

Disconnect your car battery by taking the ground cable out of the battery. It is very dangerous to work on your car’s electrical system with the battery connected.

Step 2

Remove the panel of the space that will house the speakers. In that area will be the car’s speaker wire. Attach the car’s speaker wire to the new speakers. Connect the negative (black) wire to the negative spot on the speaker and the positive (red or white) wire to the positive spot on the speaker. Connecting wires usually involves twisting them together.

Step 3

Connect the car stereo wire harness (which comes connected to the speakers’ wires) to the radio connector in the dash. This radio/CD system in the dash is known as the head unit.

Step 4

Attach the power cable (thick, positive, red) of the amplifier to the positive spot on your battery. Place the fuse into the fuse holder.

Step 5

Thread the power cable along the car’s firewall. Start at the opening in the front by the driver’s side and continue to the back where the amp is. Make sure not to run the cable close to any speaker wires. Then run the very thin remote on wire through the dash. Run the RCA signal cable to the amp from the head unit.

Step 6

Find a spot in the back of the car to place your amp and subwoofers and secure them. Try placing them in the trunk of the car.

Step 7

Connect the remote on cable and RCA cable to the head unit. Connect the remote on cable, RCA cable, ground, and power to the amp. Attach the speaker wires to the amps and the subwoofer speaker connectors.

Step 8

Check all of the connections that you’ve made to make sure they are good. Place the head unit back into the dash. Screw it into place. Put the dash back into place. Reconnect the battery.

Warning

Never work on your car with the battery in place.
