How to Install an Interlocking Metal Roof
Introduction
Metal interlocking roofs currently have a large fan base. One reason for their newfound popularity is that they are superbly durable. Metal roofs come in many styles and can look like shingles, clay tiles, slate, among other options. Metal roofs repel water and will last for many years. They can be fitted over your existing roof. Due to new technology, many homeowners can now install their own metal interlocking roof without the help of a professional.
Difficulty: Difficult
Things You'll Need:
- 30-pound felt
- Interlocking metal roof shingles
- Hammer
- Aluminum nails
Instructions
Step 1
Layer 30-pound felt in places that ice will build up such as along the edge of the roof. This is called an underlayment.
Step 2
Prepare stacks of roof pieces. Take a pile with you and position yourself at the edge of the roof.
Step 3
Put one shingle down along the edge of the roof. Secure the shingle by using a hammer to bang four aluminum nails into the shingle, one into each corner of the piece.
Step 4
Place another shingle next to the nailed down shingle but a little bit below it. It should overlap the side of the original shingle by about an inch. Slide the new shingle upwards to lock it into place with the original shingle. Nail the corners down again with a hammer.
Step 5
Install the rest of the roof tiles in the same way. You should work from side to side and move up towards the peak of the roof.
Tip
Find out if your town has any building codes that affect metal roof installation.
You can slide a few shingles into place and then nail those shingles after to save time.
Warning
Inspect your current roof for damage prior to installing the interlocking metal roof.
