How to Replace a Coupler in a Kenmore Washer
Introduction
One of the issues that washing machines can suffer from is a broken motor coupler. If you hear a clicking sound while the Kenmore washer is running, you will know that the coupler is not working properly and it will need to be replaced. The coupler will also have to be replaced if the washing machine does not spin correctly. Every machine is different so follow instructions that relate to your Kenmore washing machine model to replace the coupler accurately.
Difficulty: Moderate
Things You'll Need:
- Towel
- Wrenches
- Replacement coupler supplies
- Hammer
Instructions
Step 1
Unplug the Kenmore washing machine. Turn off the machine’s water supply. Empty all extra water from the washing machine and wipe down the inside of the washer with a towel.
Step 2
Remove the washer’s back panel. First take off the three nuts and the two clamp locking plates. Then remove the white sheet of plastic that was behind the nuts and the locking plates. This sheet of plastic is the coupler. You also need to remove the steel part that surrounds the coupler using a wrench.
Step 3
Put the new washer coupling together. Thread one of the plastic 3-prong pieces into to one side of the rubber washer. Slip this new construction into the spot that the steel part originally occupied.
Step 4
Secure the second three-prong piece to the motor housing. Gently tap the three-prong piece with a hammer to position it properly in its place. The piece’s prongs should fit into the rubber washer’s three left over holes.
Step 5
Replace the nuts and clamps using the Allen wrench. Put the Kenmore washer’s back panel back on and turn the water back on. Plug the washer in and test it to make sure that it works properly.
Tip
You may need to empty the extra water from your machine into a container so have a bucket nearby.
